So, I decided to make Butterick 5281. I spend a lot of time staring at my pattern and staring at my fabrics before I actually start. Well, I was reading reviews and staring at this pattern cover and noticed that the picture (copied from the original pattern) has a button closure at the neck instead of the weird side neck open seam thing. Odd change. I also noticed that they changed the back skirt from a 3 piece to a 2 piece, so the seams no longer line up to the darts on the back of the bodice. Another interesting thing to change. It made me think that all the patterns I've made with the back neck closure only have a neckline facing, lining the entire dress seems like an odd choice. How many dresses in the 40's were fully lined anyway?!
I then I wondered why I make things so complicated. I had decided to use a newer pattern because resizing yet another vintage one didn't seem appealing at the moment. But there it is. I've found things to change and I wander off again into the unknown.
Has anyone seen the original in the flesh/paper? Any thoughts/pointers?
